This project took 6 months to complete and required the removal of
lead fixed 130 years ago. A complete redesign of the roof was
necessary to ensure that the latest recommendations of the lead
sheet manuals were followed. The lead was laid on a building
paper underlay using timber roll at 60mm centres.
Each bay head fixed with a triple row of stainless steel nails at
50mm centres. The roof also required 26 bird beak roof vents
hand made on site to bespoke measurements and fitted to alternate
bays at ridge level on both slopes together with ventilation
details at the eves. The judges considered this entry to be
faultless in design and application. The standard of work
will be admired in another 130 years time by future
craftsmen.
The Calder lead sheet produced to BSEN12588 required for this
project was supplied via L S Smerald Limited of Bow, London.
