Most people are aware of the link to the Roman Empire and the
first water systems using lead pipes, but far fewer know of the
application of lead in
Nuclear Medicine. Modern imaging
techniques and treatments such as Positron Emission Tomography rely
on lead to provide radiation
shielding for both the patients and medical staff.
Lead is used as a weather resistant seal on
roofs, as an additive for free
machining steel , batteries that
keep the internet & cell phones working rely on
lead terminals. Our defence industry
uses lead for ballast and
radiation shielding. Copper foil is
produced using lead anodes as
is the production of
ingot copper . Galvanising & Chrome plating
anodes are made from lead along
with other novel items such as
weights for curtains and ballast weights for sub-sea
cables.
Our scientific community is dependant upon lead for
shielded rooms to aid them in
synchrotron radiation research, whilst historic buildings are still
refurbished using Calder lead
sheet.
So whether ancient or modern, large or small, simple or complex
- Calder hold the answer to all of your lead engineering
needs.
